Wooden Flooring – Solid and Engineered
We specialise in the supply of both solid wooden flooring and engineered wooden boards. The wooden flooring types differ from each other in a number of ways, from the structure, to the way they are laid and finally, where and what sub floor they can be laid onto.
Engineered Wooden Flooring
These are more commonly regarded as floating floors. In most cases these wooden floors come directly from the manufacturers already pre finished with at least 6 coats of anti-scratch UV lacquer. The board itself is made up of 3 combined layers. First, the top layer is made of a 4 mm hardwood veneer that can be sanded several times if necessary, depending on the manufacturer sometimes the wear layer can be up to 6mm thick. Then, to allow stability to the board the middle core is approximately 9 mm thick with the grain of the board running parallel to the top layer. Finally, a backing layer is then adhered to the core board which is a further 2 mm thick. Engineered wooden floors are only glued at the tongue and groove, and not on the under surface. We do have a range of engineered boards that do not require any glue at all, and use a click system, however, in all cases an underlay would be necessary between your sub floor and the engineered board. The depth of the required underlay will again depend on your sub floor.
Engineered wooden flooring is ideal for use in most environments, whether it be for domestic situations or commercial and in most cases ideal for under floor heating systems. They are easy to install and can give you years of pleasure, if maintained properly.
Solid Wooden Flooring
Also known as fixed floors, these are ultimately the cream of the crop, sourced from all over the globe offering you the customer a wide choice, ensuring that you get the ultimate look you want. Many of our wooden flooring types can be purchased unfinished requiring them to be sanded and sealed once installed. The beauty of an unfinished wooden floor is that you can dictate the look that you ultimately want, whether it is a gloss finish through to a wax or oiled finish, really the choice is yours.
Should you require wooden flooring which is already factory pre finished then we also cater for this. The benefit of a pre finished solid wooden floor is that there is far less mess with regards to the installation process and the labour costs are decreased due to the fact that the boards do not require any sanding or sealing once installed. These timbers come in an array of colours from light Maples and Oaks through to Dark Merbau and rich Walnuts.
Most of our solid wooden flooring is at least 19 mm thick and are kiln dried with a moisture content of no more than between 8-10%. It is advisable that all unfinished timbers are allowed to acclimatise on site for at least 3-5 days prior to installation.
Installation on solid boards differ from engineered, in that they are most commonly nailed to an existing sub floor, whether it be existing wooden flooring, batons and joists. In some cases, a fixed floor can be glued down, subject to the condition of the sub floor. To find out more, please contact us.
