Wood Flooring – Wood Types

Ash Wood Flooring

White to light brown, occasionally with irregular dark streaks. Course textured grain, fairly straight. Good quality Ash is outstanding for toughness

Beech Wood Flooring

Whitish to plain brown, occasionally with a dark coloured core. One of the strongest European timbers. Usually heavy and straight grained and of plain appearance.

Birch Wood Flooring

Curley grained and strongly figured. Sometimes marketed as white or red birch, colour varies form light to dark reddish brown. As flooring it is highly resistant to wear.

Cherry Wood Flooring

Pale pinkish brown, darkens somewhat on exposure to light. The grain is straight and of fine and even texture. A very decorative wood, especially in a natural grade.

Hevea Wood Flooring

A golden straw colour with flowing speckled graining. A timber that is quickly growing in popularity.

Iroko Wood Flooring

A very strong and durable timber of attractive appearance and small movement. Colour varies from pale yellow to dark brown and darkens on exposure to light. This valuable structural timber is ideal for flooring.

Jatoba Wood Flooring

The heartwood is salmon red to orange brown, becoming russet to reddish brown when seasoned. The grain may be straight, but is more commonly interlocked, and the texture is medium to coarse. The hardwood is frequently marked with dark streaks and sometimes shows a golden lustre.

Kempas Wood Flooring

A rich red brick colour that will darken to red brown when exposed to sunlight. Can have numerous yellow brown streaks, which are associated with the pores of the wood.

Maple Wood Flooring

Creamy white in colour with a reddish tinge. Less expensive grades have dark brown markings. Grain is usually straight and of fine and even texture. A timber with good strength properties and resistance to wear, it makes excellent flooring.

Merbau Wood Flooring

Yellowish to orange brown. Darkening to medium to dark red brown on exposure to light. Interlocking grain, rather coarse but even in texture. A timber of good appearance and generally free from defects, suitable for good quality flooring.

Oak (American Red)

Resembles other Oaks in appearance but heartwood usually has reddish tinge.

Oak (American White)

Similar in many respects to European Oak, the grain is generally straight. Silver grain is present in a quarter of sawn material. A very popular choice and makes for good flooring timber.

European Oak

As above, but slightly darker than American White. Oak is one of the most widely used timbers in the UK. Renowned for its durability and decorative appearance. Oak makes an ideal floor.

Rokfa (Asian Walnut)

Similar in colour, however more hard wearing than American black walnut, Rokfa has a tight and straight grain, like that of Merabu or Mahogany. Black streaks combine with brown colours to highlight the grain contours.

Walnut (American Black)

A very popular choice, a rich dark brown timber, deepening in colour with age. More uniform in colour compared to European Walnut. The grain is sometimes wavy or curly with a coarse texture.
